[The Confessions of] Ian Tayao

DO YOU ROCK?

Does the frontman of Wilabaliw indeed... rock?

Ian Irving Tayao is an interesting, cool guy. While it's difficult to easily get the frontman of Wilabaliw to open up, once he begins, he offers us a wealth of information. Here's just some of what Tayao let us in on.

EVER WRECK A CAR?
Twice.  Not a good sight.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ARRESTED?
Never.

BRUSH WITH THE LAW?
Depends. I guess so. Everybody does in their own way.

BEST RUMOR ABOUT YOURSELF?
Some people thought I was dead. Funny when people start saying sh*t like that.

WORST TOUR/GIG HORROR STORY?
I’m not sure if there was. Every show, to me, is a blessing. 45 minutes of escape? Bliss.

WORST ROCK & ROLL INJURY?
I don’t even know where to start. [Laughs] Let me just say, the stage is heaven and a war zone at the same time.

BIGGEST CELEBS IN YOUR CELLPHONE?
Bong “Quality Time” Luib and Satan.

EVER KILL AN ANIMAL?
Nope.

MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM OF CLOTHING YOU OWN?
I don’t buy clothes.

WORST PLACE YOU'VE EVER BEEN SICK?
On a bus going back to Manila from Daet. Bad case of Cellulitis from skating/ partying too much. Came from a shoot for TNT Pilipinas’ “Unscene Daet”. Got hospitalized for 7 days then went straight from the hospital to Hong Kong to shoot more footage. It was crazy. You can check it out on Youtube.com. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZpPXsfF62I

IT'S DINNER TIME; WHAT ARE YOU COOKING?
Shows.

ARE YOU A GOOD LAD OR BAD LAD?
Depends.  I’m a good person, I reckon. Just don’t fuck with me. Golden Rule.

THE LAST TIME YOU GAVE SOMEBODY THE FINGER?
Which hand? Kidding.

WHO DO YOU HATE MOST IN THE WORLD?
Cowards, Inefficiency.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MISTAKEN FOR SOMEONE ELSE?
Yes.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU HATE MOST?
Manufactured bullsh*t. Music that makes people dumb. No offense. I don’t like Lito Camo’s work and the likes. I just think there are better/ clever ways on making music. Just the music. I don’t know them personally. Maybe we can make music together so I can knock the sense out of them. That’s just my opinion. No hate involved. I respect other people’s taste and opinion. That goes for myself too.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU PRAYED?
I pray all the time.

WHAT ARE YOU LIKE WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK?
Better OR worse. Stikes and gutters.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR OWN BODY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My liver, lungs and throat. Get it?

ARE YOU A GENUIS?
I don’t know. But I know I am surrounded by beautiful, talented beings.

DO YOU LIKE BEING HECKLED? WHY AND WHY NOT?
No. For the simple reason that I get really lost when I’m being interrupted. I go on tangents most of the time, so I try (really hard) to explain to prove my point. Or we can just binge drink and get wanky. Kidding.

YOU SEEM VERY CHIPPER. WHAT PUTS YOU IN A BAD MOOD?
Hangover at mga pa-bibong bobo.

IF WE DRUG TESTED YOU, WHAT WOULD WE FIND?
Tyler Durden.

If you had a movie made about your life, which actor would play you?
Andy Kaufmann. Please. But he’s dead.

WHO IS THE LAST PERSON YOU WANTED TO KILL, MAIM, OR INJURE?
I don’t like hurting people… Nowadays…

OUR VERDICT:
IAN TAYAO’S IMMEDIATE APPROVAL THE MOMENT I INVITED HIM FOR THIS INTERVIEW, PLUS HIS BEING BRUTALLY HONEST AND PRANK WHILE MAINTAINING HIS COOL DEMEANOR, NOT TO MENTION, HIM TEAMING WITH REG RUBIO, CHITO MIRANDA AND JAY CONTRERAS (FOR THE LATTER’S BAND LATEST SINGLE, MERONAKONG ANO), AND HIM ALWAYS ROCKING (READ: WASAK) ON EVERY WILABALIW’S SHOWS, proving what ALL the TATTOOS on his body showed all alonG, IT CANNOT BE DENIED: THIS ROCK STAR ROCKS BIG TIME! NEED I SAY MORE?

Hooray for BANDS Magazine 5th Anniversary Issue

GIMME FIVE
At a time when music and rock ‘n’ roll coverage needs it the most, BANDS has once again raised the bar. Running through the heart of our latest issue—featuring an exclusive interview with cover artist SLAPSHOCK—is the central theme of creation. Slapshock has truly hit upon the recipe for success. And with a new album "Kinse Kalibre" now available, the band is not content to rest on its laurels yet…

BANDS’ editor Jayson E. Paor looks back as BANDS Magazine celebrates its 5th Anniversary issue.

“When BANDS first rolled off the press five years ago, I had no idea what was in store. All I knew was BANDS was born with nothing more than faith and love on the scene, that the new generation was hungry looking for new, great bands, and that we saw the need for a magazine that would explore the passions and insights of the exciting world of the band scene. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sure, five years of BANDS existence may not have built many pyramids, or carved a very big swath of the Grand Canyon, but when you know you’re part of the exhilarating times for rock ‘n’ roll and in a way you are chronicling the scene, that already in itself, is success.

Isn’t it amazing that BANDS is so important, and so necessary, and has successfully established its mark in the local music biz today?

BANDS has become the ‘Philippines’ best music guide to bands’ with its responsible and fresh features, most requested songs, compelling and unbiased lists and exclusive cover interviews, and profiles of today’s top and new and upcoming music stars. Props to BANDS’ ‘Keep looking, don’t settle’ philosophy. Plus, all’s fair in love and war. Possibly.

Where other magazines are disappearing, we’re thriving. Good music will prevail.

In honor of our 5th Anniversary issue, we thank you all for hanging with us during the good and even the bad times. Most of all, thank you for letting us do what we so enjoy doing.

At BANDS, we promise we are not going anywhere; instead we will continue to grow and get better each and every issue. So where do we go from here after this? Well, much like the day the first issue of BANDS rolled off the press, I think I know, but I couldn't be so sure. But one thing is certain. The best is, without a doubt, yet to come.”
