Simple Plan Live in Manila: "Get Your Heart On! Tour"

Get ready to have your simple world turned upside down as the band that gave you the hit song Welcometo My Life, Untitled and Perfect once again rocks Manila. DAYLY Entertainment and Midas Promotions proudly brings: Simple Plan Live in Manila for the Get Your Heart On! Tour.

This Canadian pop punk band from Montréal, Quebec entered the pop punk rock scene in 1999. High school friends Charles-Andre "Chuck" Comeau, Jean-Francois "Jeff" Stinco and Sebastian Lefebvre got together to form Simple Plan. Comeau met former Reset bandmate Pierre Bouvier at a Sugar Ray concert, and soon after Bouvier left Reset to join Simple Plan. David Desroriers joined the band and replaced Bouvier on bass, allowing Bouvier to concentrate on the singing.

They released their first studio album, No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls in 2002, with twelve tracks including the hit "Perfect", creating a mark on the pop punk rock scene. This was followed by Still Not Getting Any in 2004 with singles Welcome to My  Life, Shut Up!, Untitled, Crazy and Perfect World. According to the band, on this album, they wanted to explore a more "versatile" sound, still good music but not limited to the punk rock genre.

After touring for more than a year and performing for their massive music fan base, Simple Plan took some time off in 2006 to work on their 3rd album, working with producer Dave Fortman. On October 29, 2006 they released their self titled album Simple Plan with When I'm Gone as the carrier single peaking at number 26 on the UK charts, giving them their highest charting single in the UK. Simple Plan's music has now achieved global status and has earned them numerous nominations and several wins at different music awards.

Not just your average rock stars, Simple Plan has also shown their philanthropic side by donating to many non profit and advocacy groups like MTV Asia Aid Benefit, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), RADD (Recording Artists and Athletes against Drunk Driving) and Make-A Wish Foundation. Afterwards they created the Simple Plan Foundation, a foundation that focuses on teen problems.

Simple Plan also made a mark in Hollywood by having several of their songs featured in the movies Scooby Doo and Scooby Doo 2. They also appeared in the 2004 film New York Minute. The band garnered considerable worldwide recognition and their name has become a staple to many teenagers and young adults' music playlists.

To promote their 4th album Get Your Heart On!, which features collaboration with several artists like Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Natasha Bedingfield, K'naan and All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth, Simple Plan embarks on their Get Your Heart On tour. Jet Lag feat. Natasha Bedingfield for the English version and Marie-Mai for the French version is the album's first single and has gained significant airplay worldwide.

The band has visited Manila first in March 2005, performing together with Avril Lavigne. Leaving their local fans wanting for more, they came back in August 2008 with New Found Glory and Jamie Scott. Now, Simple Plan will once again bring some punk rock induced energy into Manila on January 12, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Jump, scream and sing your lungs out to the latest tunes brought to you by Simple Plan!

Gloc 9: Music That Changed My Life

Francis M’s Rap is Francism
Mga Praning
“Lagi kong kinakanta ‘to sa lahat ng school presentation namin noon. Kahit ‘di pa noon kilala masyado ang rap lalo na sa lugar namin sa Rizal.”

Bone Thugs n Harmony’s Creeping On A Come Up
Thuggish Ruggish Bone
“After listening to this song ng sobrang daming beses, I somehow understood kung paano nila ginagawa ‘yung rap na parang mabilis. So I tried to write my own rhymes with the same technique in Tagalog.”

Missy Eliot’s Supa Dupa Fly
The Rain
“Noong narinig ko ang tunog niya with producer Timbaland, medyo nasira ang ulo ko kasi sobrang unique at ang lutong ng mga elements kahit ‘di ganun kadami.”

Asin
Balita
“Kahit matagal na ‘yung kantang ‘to noong pinakinggan ko nakakabilib ng sobra dahil parang ahead of its time siya in terms of phrasing and words – hindi pinilit ang mga letra at timing ng pagkakabigkas na minsan nating nadidinig sa ibang songs.”

Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP
The Way I Am
“Kinanta nya ito sa isang awards night and doon ko unang nadinig ‘yung pagpalit n’ya ng timing or rhythm ng rap lines n’ya parang alanganin na on point parang ganun pero sobrang ‘mismo’. Nabaliw ako!”

Stan
“With this song I realized na walang boundaries pagdating sa pagsulat or concepts ng mga kanta. Parang naiwanan n’ya lahat ng ibang rappers ng at least sampung taon. Ganun katindi para sa akin.”

Eminem’s The Eminem Show
Cleaning Out My Closet
“Natatandaan ko nagta-trabaho pa ako sa isang mall sa Ortigas Center at every time break ko pupunta ako sa isang record bar para pakinggan 'to sa listening station ng paulit-ulit.
Sabi ko sa sarili ko gusto ko ring magka-album (ng) parang si Eminem.”

USEFUL TIPS FROM THE EXPERT

HOW TO…
RAP BRILLIANTLY
GLOC-9 HELPS YOU FIND YOUR RAP STYLE
WITH THE RIGHT TIMING AND RHYTHM

1
Siguraduhing gusto mong mag-rap at trip mo ang rap.

2
Kung wala ka pang kahit anong experience sa rap humakot at makinig ng mga rap CDs. Listen to Eminem, Kanye West, BTNH, Twista, Jay-Z, T.I, etc.

3
Minsan dapat dumating sa point na naiintindihan mo na kung paano nila ginagawa ang mga style na ginagamit nila sa pagra-rap. It’s all about timing and rhythm.

4
Huwag magmadali.

5
Pakinggan ng pakinggan ang sarili. There is always room for improvement. Minsan mas nara-rap mo ng mas maganda ang lines kung mas matagal mo na itong pina-practice. Mas may magandang rhythm kang naiisip.

6
Always pray before a performance. Magdasal ka na sana hindi mo makalimutan ang lines mo. Hehehe!

Pop-Punk All Time Low Touchdown in Manila

[WISH YOU WERE HERE]

ALL TIMELOW TOUCHDOWN IN MANILA

WHEN:     September 22, 2011
WHERE:   EDSA Shangri-La Hotel

Alternative Press hailed this band on the cover of their "Most Anticipated Music of 2011" issue. And indeed it was worth anticipating as former indie band All Time Low releases their fourth album and first major label record Dirty Work. It conquered even the Philippines charting at leading record bars with throngs of fans flocking to get a copy of the album on its first day of release. So with the amazing response All Time Low got here, it was a no-brainer that they just had to come to the country for a concert held last September 22 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to the delight of the fans.

For Dirty Work, All Time Low – featuring Gaskarth, Dawson, lead guitarist Jack Barakat, bassist Zack Merrick – teamed up with some of rock's most in-demand producers and studio aces, including Mike Green (Paramore, Boys Like Girls) and Butch Walker (Pink, Dashboard Confessional). The result is their most confident collection of songs yet, including the blistering Time-Bomb and Guts, which features a guest spot from Maja Ivarsson of the Swedish indie-rock group the Sounds.

The carrier single I Feel Like Dancing was co-written by Rivers Cuomo of Weezer at his Southern California home together with Gaskarth.
In a lot of ways, this is the perfect summer record," says drummer Rian Dawson of the band's fourth album. "The songs are really loud and will get you to roll the windows down. It's just a fun record all around.”

Despite the good-times vibe of Dirty Work, All Time Low spent a grueling two years making the album – in between brief breaks from their non-stop touring schedule (which has included top slots at Warped Tour in 2007, Bamboozle in 2010, and festival billings with their heroes Blink-182). The majority of the sessions were completed with Green in Los Angeles, but the freewheeling schedule only boosted the band's songwriting spirits.

The diversity of All Time Low’s influences is inherent on this album. Just the Way I'm Not is the band's homage to Def Leppard classic stadium rockers – they even sampled the British group's drum sound on the track – while cuts like Do You Want Me (Dead) find Gaskarth channeling icons like the Clash at their catchiest. "They played a vital role in a few songs on the album," he says. "I really admired how they broke all the rules – they helped me realize that you can change up your sound and you don't have to be afraid of holding yourself back."
Gaskarth's most surprising lyrical influence, however, came from Ella Fitzgerald's It's Only a Paper Moon on the track Under A Paper Moon – a testament to All Time Low's broad musical tastes and proof of how far Gaskarth has grown as a lyricist. "It's one of my favorite songs," he says. "We get lumped into this category of bands that grew up on Blink-182, but this song really puts us beyond that category of pop-punk."
All Time Low have come a long way since forming in Baltimore as teenagers playing Blink covers in high-school. Before they'd even graduated, they released two raucous mission statements -- the 2004 EP The Three Words to Remember in Dealing With the End and the 2005 full-length The Party Scene – and went on to sign with indie stalwart Hopeless Records in 2006. But it was their 2007 release So Wrong, It's Right that cracked everything wide open. All Time Low's third record, 2009's Nothing Personal, fared even better, debuting at Number Four on the Billboard chart and earning them positive reviews from outlets as far-reaching as Alternative Press and The Washington Post.

Despite their success, All Time Low have kept their egos in check – even their road crew include pals who've toured with the band from their early days playing tiny Maryland clubs like the Recher Theater. And this was further witnesses as the Philippine media met them before they went onstage to rock the crowd.

Manila surely was at an all time high with this band called All Time Low!

Members:  Alex Gaskarth (vocalist and rhythm guitarist), JackBarakat (lead guitarist and backing vocalist),
Rian Dawson (drummer) and Zack Merrick (bassist and backing vocalist)

Q&A WITH ALL TIME LOW

We know you've answered this question before, but can you explain for us again why you decided to call the album Dirty Work?
Gaskarth: The title of the album summarizes the theme of the songs, most of which centralize around escapism; running from my problems, burning bridges because of those problems; and the realization that its hard work to rebuild after those problems have torn people apart. There was a time when the work I was doing felt wrong, and that my life choices had paved the way for something worse to come. The record deals with overcoming that idea.

Do you feel any kind of pressure on this album following the success of Nothing Personal? In addition, this is your first release on Interscope Records. How have things changed for you now that you're on a major label?
Gaskarth: Sure. There's always pressure to live up to the success of the previous release, but you can't spend all your time stressing about it. The main goal in the record making process is to focus on what you want next and strive for it. That's all that matters.

Not much has changed as far as the dynamic of the band or how we function. With Interscope as our new family, we have an opportunity to grow beyond the capabilities of an independent label. That's not to say that Hopeless "wasn't good enough," because Hopeless was a phenomenal label to be tied into, and they did so much for us. Partnering with Interscope simply introduced us to a larger team, with global reach and resources, essentially opening new doors for what we can achieve as a band.

Does the band’s increasing popularity have any impact on how you see yourselves and your fans?
Gaskarth: We’ve been fortunate enough to have some amazing opportunities as the band has grown but it feels very much the same. We still have this amazing connection to our fans that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Sponge Cola: The Sweet Taste of Success

Diamond-recording band Sponge Cola back in business
Releases fourth album Araw Oras Tagpuan under Universal Records

The only recording band to reach diamond after Eraserheards for the outstanding sales of Tambay (EP) via Coca-Cola’s summer promo, Sponge Cola scores yet again as the band releases its highly anticipated fourth full-length album titled Araw Oras Tagpuan under Universal Records. But the band is not content to rest on its laurels yet, this is just the beginning.

Composed ofYael Yuzon (vocals/guitars), Erwin Armovit (lead guitars), Gosh Dilay (bass) and Tedmark Cruz (drums), Sponge Cola has always made its presence felt since breaking the local music scene in 2002 via Madonna’s Crazy For You.

In the past nine years, Sponge Cola has gone from nowhere to full-fledged phenomenon on the strength of its three bestselling albums: Palabas (2004), Transit (2006) and Sponge Cola (2008). Only one of the few bands that couldn't help but hit, Sponge Cola went on to producing chart-topping singles such as KLSP, Gemini, Jeepney, Bitiw, Tuliro, Movie, Pasubali, Puso, Ayt!, Makapiling Ka, Di Na Mababawi and so on.

From then on, the band's popularity doesn't seem to be waning. It was evident from numerous awards and citations received by the band. From favorite artist to favorite song to favorite group to favorite rock video to favorite vocalist to achieving gold and platinum awards, Sponge Cola’s rise to full stardom never stops, and it shows no sign of flickering.

In fact, the rocket ride to the top doesn't look as if it's going to end any time soon.

Just recently, Sponge Cola's Tambay (EP) earned the band a diamond record in sales. The band in unison says, "It's a great feeling. We're very thankful. We appreciate the support we get from people."

The band’s new album's title says Araw Oras Tagpuan—date, time, place—Armo said they just wanted to create something that strings our ideas on space, time, fate and choice together.

Yael elaborates, "I like the swagger that the title suggests. It's like ‘Give me a time, date and place and we'll be there.’ But with said swagger, it still feels down to earth, which is I think how are we these days, in my head at least.”

Araw Oras Tagpuan consists of 12 tracks that include massive hits Tambay, Regal and the new hit single Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay. Other songs included are Walang Wakas which became the theme song of ABS-CBN’s series Wansapanatym: Rod Santiago’s Buhawi Jack; New Steel which features Paolo Valenciano of Salamin, Ria Redulla, and Los Magno of Outof Body Special; and Warning featuring Norma Love, Iwa Motor, and Mowmow of Tanya Markova.

In this album, nine out of twelve songs were mainly written and co-written by Yael along with Gosh. It is interesting to note that the collaboration with these artists adds hip hop, new metal, and retro to the band’s definitive music.

In an exclusive interview with BANDS Magazine when asked what the video for Kay TagalKang Hinintay is about and what new fans can expect from it, Yael shares, "My brother Yanny who plays guitar for Pupil and sings for Archipelago directed it in Bacolod. As a theater director, he's known for bold, riveting plays, often pushing boundaries and never failing to move. It was our first time to fly outside Manila to shoot a music video. It showcases the beauty of provincial life. And yeah, love."

"I just want them to listen freely and take whatever they want/can from the material, Armo says when asked what they would want the audience to hear within the lyrics of their songs from Araw Oras Tagpuan. Yael adds, “[And] Catharsis lang naman as always."

When asked what happens in his head when he composes – the creative process before he writes it down or put his hands on the guitar – and how his persona plays a role in that process, Yael says, "It depends. Sometimes I play with words, then a persona is formed. Sometimes it's me, sometimes it's someone else. It's usually someone similar to me at least."

"Fall where they may. And then someone figures it out for us. We just write," says Yael when asked if he consciously thinks, "Oh, this will work for us with the market; that will work well with the mainstream"? Or do the songs just fall where they may.

In the latest issue of Pinoy Mag, correspondent Box Garchitorena writes that it would be hard to pick singles in this record that throws a lot of possible ones. The record as he puts it screams a resounding "we’re not done!"

The one thing commendable with Sponge Cola is that this group is not afraid to experiment and take the music to different places.

True enough.

That’s what Sponge Cola always known for.  They are not afraid to experiment and take the music to different places. "This is just how we are. We do whatever we want to go, making music is what we do. We keep it real. [And] We’re all about the fun," Yael says.

And when asked how their values and faith changed in these remarkable years of success, Yael proudly states, "They haven’t, they’ve stayed the same, and we’re still the same people with the same beliefs, fighting for the same principles."

Hooray for BANDS Magazine 5th Anniversary Issue

GIMME FIVE
At a time when music and rock ‘n’ roll coverage needs it the most, BANDS has once again raised the bar. Running through the heart of our latest issue—featuring an exclusive interview with cover artist SLAPSHOCK—is the central theme of creation. Slapshock has truly hit upon the recipe for success. And with a new album "Kinse Kalibre" now available, the band is not content to rest on its laurels yet…

BANDS’ editor Jayson E. Paor looks back as BANDS Magazine celebrates its 5th Anniversary issue.

“When BANDS first rolled off the press five years ago, I had no idea what was in store. All I knew was BANDS was born with nothing more than faith and love on the scene, that the new generation was hungry looking for new, great bands, and that we saw the need for a magazine that would explore the passions and insights of the exciting world of the band scene. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sure, five years of BANDS existence may not have built many pyramids, or carved a very big swath of the Grand Canyon, but when you know you’re part of the exhilarating times for rock ‘n’ roll and in a way you are chronicling the scene, that already in itself, is success.

Isn’t it amazing that BANDS is so important, and so necessary, and has successfully established its mark in the local music biz today?

BANDS has become the ‘Philippines’ best music guide to bands’ with its responsible and fresh features, most requested songs, compelling and unbiased lists and exclusive cover interviews, and profiles of today’s top and new and upcoming music stars. Props to BANDS’ ‘Keep looking, don’t settle’ philosophy. Plus, all’s fair in love and war. Possibly.

Where other magazines are disappearing, we’re thriving. Good music will prevail.

In honor of our 5th Anniversary issue, we thank you all for hanging with us during the good and even the bad times. Most of all, thank you for letting us do what we so enjoy doing.

At BANDS, we promise we are not going anywhere; instead we will continue to grow and get better each and every issue. So where do we go from here after this? Well, much like the day the first issue of BANDS rolled off the press, I think I know, but I couldn't be so sure. But one thing is certain. The best is, without a doubt, yet to come.”
